Mr. Smith was one of the substantial citizens of the county and a man who took active and well directed interest in local as well as county affairs.

The deceased was a genial gentleman, and his home was noted for its unstinted hospitality to all visitors, With a large family of young people, all guests were entertained in a manner that left nothing but pleasant recollections "Uncle Rast" as he was familiarity called, was universally loved and respected and will be greatly missed, not only by his immediate family, but by all who knew him.

Mr. Smith united with the Christian church on Four Mile about 35 years ago, and has always been an upright, honest citizen. In all walks of life he revealed the best qualities of manhood. In temperament he was mild, conciliatory and candid, and yet remarkable for an uncompromising firmness. He gained confidence when he seemed least to seek it. He believed in the fatherhood of God and the brotherhood of man. He believed that “men and women, youth and children, seek the friendship of the sunny-faced” and that “all doors are open to those who smile.”
