James was born in Aberdeen, Scotland; editor of the Lafayette College Journal 1877-78; graduated from Lafayette College in Easton PA in 1878; Valedictorian; Principal of Wilkes-Barre Classical School...The Record of the Men of Lafayette, Coffin, 1879.

James Cameron MacKenzie's stone has the inscription, "That youth in quest of Knowledge might be guided by the light of truth." According to an online genealogy by John Mackenzie (Associate Professor at the University of Delaware), James and his wife Eleanor had the following children: Cameron, Alexander, George Miner, James Cameron and daughters Jean, Anna and Margaret.
