Franklin Leroy Albert, 85, formerly of Steelton and Ecumenical Community, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday August 4, 2009, at the Colonial Park Care Center in Harrisburg, PA.
Franklin was born to Robert "Whitey" Edwin Albert and Minnie Royal (Funk) in Steelton, PA on August 21, 1923. He was preceded in death by 6 brothers and 1 sister: Robert Theodore, John Jacob, Victor Wilson, Lorraine "Sis" Edith, Richard Allen, Charles and Edwin Junior.
Franklin married Ruth Mae (Walter) on June 22, 1946. They recently celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary.
Surviving are his wife Ruth and their five children: Bonita Lee (Frank) Gallaher, Vicki Lee Dryden, Terry Lee (Sharon), Frank Lee (Linda) and Dana Lee (Laura) - given their middle names in honor of their father, Franklin Leroy. His legacy continues to grow with 15 grand children and 10 great grand children.
Frank was born and raised on the West side of Steelton, "The Small Town with A Big Heart", PA .
Frank worked for 41 years for the Borough of Steelton in the Water Department. He dedicated his time and energy to his community in many ways. Frank was a member of the West Side Hose Company #3 since 1943. He was their President from 1969 until his death. He was a member of the Steelton Fire Department, the Dauphin County Volunteer Firemen's Association., and the Southeastern Firemen's Association.
He was a member of the Steelton Raiders Athletic Association, and the Steelton Midget Baseball League. He coached the Steelton Lion's Club Little League Baseball Team for many years.
He was an assistant coach with the former Calvin Heller, of the Steelton Lions basketball team. He was indeed a sports advocate and remained a big fan of the Steel-High Steamrollers. He was a talented fundraiser, soliciting funds and volunteers for various organizations and numerous benefits, such as the Easter egg hunt, Christmas gifts for needy children and supporting the families of fire survivors.
He was known by his friends and family for his ability to recall dates, people, events, and details of memories of his life in Steelton.
Frank was a former member of the Main Street Church of God on the West Side. After the flood of 1972 he began attending the Locust Street E.U.B. Church and then Centenary United Methodist Church in Steelton.
Viewing will be held Sunday, August 9th 2009 from 6 p.m.-8 p.m. in the K. M. Knight Funeral Home, 31 Second Street, Highspire, PA. A committal service will be held in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens at the convenience of the family.
