Lester A. McKean, 59, of Forreston Slashed His Wrists Early Friday
Lester A. McKean, 59, of Forreston, brother of Mrs. Jesse Eads, 920 Logan avenue, Dixon, passed away Friday morning at St. Francis hospital Freeport where he was taken in an ambulance after he had walked into the home of a neighbor, Mrs. Jacob Long showing her his slashed wrists wrapped in blood-stained towels and stating:
"I've started something I can't finish."
A Stephenson county coroner's jury, impanelled at Freeport by E. A. Diestelmeier, coroner, returned a verdict of suicide.
McKean, who lived alone arrived at the Long home about 7:35 a.m. Friday according to Mrs. Long. He told her he had slashed his wrists with a razor about 1 a.m. and after examining the cuts she urged him to see a doctor.
Ordered to Hospital
Ordered to the hospital by the physician, McKean appeared to have overcome the effects of the wrist cuts and walked from the ambulance to his hospital bed. He died about an hour later.
The Forreston man had been in failing health, and his poor physical condition combined with shock and loss of blood was held responsible for his death. He had been despondent since the death of a son, Cpl. Jack McKean, in a motorcycle accident December 14, 1944, on New Guiena, according to neighbors.
Born Dec. 18, 1886 at Deland, Ill., Mr. McKean had served in the navy for a number of years and lived at Polo before going to Forreston about seven years ago. He had been employed as a day laborer at various business places.
Surviving are three sons, Clarence of Decatur, Pvt. Max McKean en route home from Manila after duty in the Pacific with the army, and Lester Jr., Haldane, discharged from the army two weeks ago, and a sister, Mrs. Eads.
Funeral services will be held at the DeGraff Brothers funeral home in Forreston at 2:00 o'clock Sunday afternoon, with burial in the Forreston cemetery.
