Jefferson Davis Baughman was the son of Michael Joseph Baughman (1826-1886) and Emeline Chapman Baughman (1835-1886). Michael Joseph Baughman and Emeline Chapman were born in Fairfield District, South Carolina. They came to Jackson Parish, Louisiana, from Fairfield District, South Carolina in 1856. They had thirteen children, one of whom was Jefferson Davis Baughman.

Jefferson Davis Baughman was a steamboat captain and a very successful merchant. In 1902 he built the Baughman House in Union Parish, Louisiana. The home is a magnificent Queen Anne Victorian house. It was perhaps the finest home in Union Parish, Louisiana, in the early nineteen twenties. The old home was recently purchased and restored and is now being used as a Bed and Breakfast. Today it is called "Edgewood Plantation". The Baughman home originally had 13 rooms with high ceilings and hardwood floors, with beautiful crown molding detail.

Jefferson Davis "J. D" Baughman and his wife, Nancy, had four daughters. Fay Baughman was the oldest daughter and she was the last one to reside in the beautiful old Baughman home.
