Dale Ellsworth Birdsell was born in Athens Township, Jewell County, Kansas to Roscoe Oren and Thelma Marie Larison Birdsell.

At the age of four his mother died, leaving him and his older sister and younger brother motherless. His maternal grandparents, George and Harriet Adeline "Addie" Jacobs Larison moved back to Jewell County to help their son-in-law, Roscoe, raise his three children.

On Dec. 31, 1945 Dale was united in marriage to Geneva Beth Knight at Beloit, Mitchell County, Kansas. To this union six children were born; Jackie, Johnnie, Jimmie, Judy, Jody and Jerry.

Dale grew up on a farm and Dale and Geneva started their married life farming. A few years later, Dale accepted a position with the railroad. After about 8 years, the itch to farm was too strong to ignore. They returned to Jewell County and Dale continued to have his heart and hands into farming up until the time of his death.

Dale also displayed a keen interest in antiques, going with Geneva to many auctions and helping her with Waconda Antiques, the antique shop Geneva had at Cawker City.

His first love was his wife, children and grandchildren. He enjoyed spending time with and watching his children and grandchildren grow into adults.
