He was born Jan. 2, 1930, in Oreana, Ill., to Keith W. and Laura E. Weeks Evans. He married Ardis A. Hindal Dec. 26, 1954, at the Capitol Hill Christian Church in Des Moines, Iowa.
A graduate of Des Moines Tech in 1947, he earned a B.S. in 1957 and a M.S. from Drake University in 1959.He served in the Korean Conflict from 1951-1953 with the Army 361st Engineers.He taught in Maxwell, Iowa, from 1957-1959 and was an elementary principal in Eddyville, Iowa, from 1959-1962. He was the principal at Douglas, Stuart, Jefferson, Agassiz and Lincoln Elementary schools in Ottumwa for 26 years from 1962-1988. He owned and operated Ottumwa Camping Center from 1960-1978.He was a member of the First Baptist Church, a life member of National Education Association, life member of National Association of Elementary School Principals, a member of Ottumwa School Employees Credit Union Board and a board member of Tenco Workshop. In 1990, he and his wife established a scholarship for a sixth-grade boy and girl to be awarded annually from Indian Hills Community College.
Surviving are his wife, Ardis; three sons, Warren (Virginia) Evans of Ft. Worth, Texas, Charles Evans of Orlando, Fla., Bob (Leona) Evans of Prescott, Ariz.; two daughters, Janis (Roger) Koehn and Patty (John) Carruthers, both of Ottumwa; nine grandchildren, Jeff and Brian Evans, Amy Gay, Kelli and Blake Evans, Leah and Jared Zwer, Kassandra and Evan Carruthers; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Jean Davis of Des Moines, Iowa, and a brother, Roger Evans of Waukee, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Doris Wells.Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Reece Funeral Home with Don Bramschreiber officiating.
