Funeral Held Monday for D. W. Benson
Following an illness which had kept him in bed for nine weeks, Mr. D. W. Benson, one of the county's most beloved citizens, passed to his reward Sunday evening about six o'clock.
Mr. Benson was 65 years of age. He was a member of the Baptist church and made his home near Newhebron, where he had spent most of his life. He has served as constable and Justice of the Peace in his district several times, and took an active part and great interest in religious and social circles.
Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at three o'clock from Newhebron church, when many sorrowing friends and relatives came to pay their last respects to him. The huge offering of beautiful flowers bespoke the friendship he enjoyed during his stay on earth, and the words of consolation spoken by his pastor and assistants, told of the Heavenly reward that he must now enjoy.
Rev. B. H. Phillips had charge of services, assisted by Revs. Shearer and McAlpin. Hartman Funeral Home of Brookhaven was in charge of burial with Messrs. R. M. Grubbs, Ernest Mullins, W. E. Jones, W. V. May, Louie Waltman and Isom Buckley acting as pall bearers.
Mr. Benson is survived by his wife; his mother, Mrs. Martha Ross Benson, of Silver Creek; four children, Mesdames Nannie Hall and Edna Buckley, Newhebron; and Mrs. Banks Brown, Mendenhall; one son, Robert Benson, of Newhebron; five sisters, Mrs. Mattie Sills, Mrs. Mollie Shows, Mrs. Lon Sullivan, Mrs. Tina Godbold, Mrs. Lillie Sharp; four brothers, Floyd, Fleet, J. P., and Tom Walker.
Interment was made in Newhebron cemetery.
