Son of Charles and Alice (Hinckley) Gott.

When Charles Gott was lost at sea in 1848, Pearl, his mother and siblings, went to live with various family members. In 1860, he was a sailor, living in Brooksville, Maine with his married sister and her family. By 1861 he was living in Sterling, Massachusetts and gave his occupation as wheelwright.

On 12 Jul 1861 Pearl mustered into service with the 15th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, being credited to the quota of Sterling, Massachusetts. He was 20 years, 4 months and 28 days old.

On 17 Feb 1862 he ended military service with the 15th Massachusetts by transfer to the Western Gunboat service.
Pearl S. Gott died on 7 Apr 1862 at Island No. 10 on the Gunboat "St. Louis." He was 21 years, 1 month and 24 days old.

From "Operations of the Western Flotilla," by Admiral Henry Walke, from The Century Magazine, Vol. XXIX, Jan., 1885.
On the 17th an attack was made on the upper battery by all the iron-clads and mortar-boats. The Benton (flag-steamer), lashed between the Cincinatti and St. Louis, was on the east side of the river; the Mound City, Carondelet, and Pittsburgh were on the west side; .... We opened fire on the upper fort at 1:20, and by order of the flag-officer fired one gun a minute. The enemy replied promptly, and some of his shot struck the Benton, but, owing to the distance from which they were fired, did but little damage. We silenced all the guns in the upper fort except one. During the action one of the rifled guns of the St. Louis exploded, killing and wounding several of the gunners; another proof of the truth of the saying that the guns furnished the Western flotilla were less destructive to the enemy than to ourselves.
