Son of James Chipman and Salena Huntsman

Husband of Sadie Charters Hindley, 8 June 1903, Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Utah

Husband of Dora Elizabeth Priday, 17 April 1907, Logan, Cache, Utah

Alva Barnabas Chipman was born on 18 July 1883 in American Fork, Utah. His father James was first married to Sarah Annadella Green to whom four children were born. Alva's mother, Selena Huntsman, was James' second wife and to this union, twelve children were born, Alva being the eleventh.

Alva attended school in American Fork and also received formal education at the Agricultural College in Logan, Utah. His family moved to Salt Lake City and purchased a lovely home on the corner of 5th and D Streets. James Chipman was a prosperous banker and provided his family with all the necessities of life plus luxuries denied the average family. Alva had Shetland ponies and a small cart to hitch them to. The family also owned two cows which they kept in a coral with a high board fence. The ponies hooves were so long they could hardly walk. One day the cows got out and nearly went wild as they had never been outside of the corral before. When a boy Alva would keep his father's shoes shined for him, which pleased James very much.

Alva was married to Dora Elizabeth Priday at her home in Providence, Utah, on 5 February 1907 by Newel Kimball. They received their endowments at the Salt Lake Temple on 5 February 1908.

A son was born to them on 2 August 1908 and was christened Alva Stanford. Alva Sr. was called on a mission to the Northern States when Stanford was a small child. He returned from his mission in September 1911 and made a living as a banker in Pleasant Grove, Utah. Here they built a new home and raised their children - four in all: Alva Stanford, date of birth 2 August 1908; Louise, date of birth 12 June 1912; Thomas Gordon, date of birth 31 December 1915, and Sarah Kathryn, date of birth 16 August 1917.

In the year 1919, there was a terrible epidemic of influenza in Pleasant Grove. Whole families became sick and were quarantined for weeks. Alva also contracted the disease which caused his death on 31 March 1919. His funeral was held at home because of the epidemic.
