Mary Jane was the daughter of Martin Van Buren Smith and Mary Caroline Kemp. She married her lifetime friend, William Wesley Jackson on Christmas Day 1878. They had known each other their entire lives and were only 2 days apart in age.

Mary and Will lived in Fernbank, Lamar Co., AL until about 1900 when they relocated their family first to Searcy Co., AR and then later to Carroll Co., AR.

Their children were:
John Henry Jackson
Martha Frances "Mattie" Jackson
Isabell Jackson
James Virgil Jackson
Margaret Isabell Jackson
Ida Lou Jackson
William Claude Jackson
Emma Leona Jackson

The following obituary was published at the time of her death:

Mrs. W. W. Jackson---
Many hearts were made sad by news of the death of Mrs. W. W. Jackson, who died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Lincoln Stephenson near Blue Eye, MO. Mrs Jackson and her husband were long-time residents of the Farewell district and were loved and respected by all. Mrs. Jackson had been an invalid for many years and had been real sick for several weeks. Her husband preceded her in death about two years ago.

Mrs. Jackson leaves two sons and three daughters to mourn her departure: Claude of ID, John and Mrs. Lincoln Stephenson of Blue Eye, MO, Mrs. Dolph King of IA, Mrs. Ida Walker of Kansas City, MO, and Mrs. Mattie Tipton of Green Forest, AR. All were with her during her last illness except Claude.

She was a good Christian woman, a member of the Primitive Baptist Church, and was strong in her belief. It can truly be said that a good woman has gone to her reward. Her children have lost a good mother and the community has lost a good citizen.

Her grandsons were pall bearers at the funeral services which were conducted at Blue Eye. Her body was laid to rest beside her husband in Yocum Cemetery.
