Elijah was the son of Charles and Abigail Milbury Gorby Harding. He was married to Harriett Welthy Tully Thomas in 1874.

According to family history done by Amy Katherine Gardella, when Annie Elizabeth Harding Gardella died, (Annie was the daughter of Eli's brother John Richmond Harding and wife of Steven Andrew (Andrea) Gardella.) she left seven children. Several family members stepped up to take in the youngest. Uncle Jeff (Eli) and Aunt Hattie took in Hazel, Albert and Roy. Aunt Hattie had become so attached to Hazel she could not part with her and Hazel stayed with the Hardings.
