INSTANT DEATH
Comes to Omer D. Jolliffe at Auto Races
Omer D. (Jack) Jolliffe was instantly killed last Saturday afternoon about 5:00 while a spectator of the automobile races at Indianapolis. The 300 miles contest was on. Jolliffe and Lora Vandivier from the Union neighborhood in this county had been in the grandstand but being unable to find seats, descended and were gradually making their way toward the outskirts. They stopped to watch the leaders in the race and Jolliffe let his eye follow the Jackson which speeded past. Mr. Vandivier was just behind him and when the second in the race, a large National, was coming directly at them. His hand was on Jolliffe's shoulder and he cried, "Lookout," but had no sooner spoken than crash came the machine and his companion was killed instantly. He scarcely knows how he, himself escaped. The auto had hit a concrete embankment and then took a great plunge and Jolliffe was struck as it flew through the air. He was hit on the left side of the head and death was instantaneous.
It was perhaps a half hour before the body was brought into the city where after the coroner had made the necessary inquiries and investigations, it was turned over to A.M. Ragsdale, undertaker.
Carl Jolliffe and Ed Jolliffe, of this city, were notified of the accident that had happened to their brother and went to the city to take charge of the remains.
Funeral services were held at Lick Spring church Monday afternoon at 2:00 conducted by Rev. Lee Tinsley.
An affecting scene at the funeral was the presence of the entire bible class of J. R. Dugan numbering forty members, of which the deceased young man had been a member since its organization at Union church early this last spring. After the body had been consigned to earth the class in unison recited the Lord's Prayer.
The deceased was 27 years of age and unmarried. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Jolliffe living south of Samaria. His brothers surviving are Ed and Carl of this city and Loren who lives at home as do his sisters, Osia and Ruth.
