Mary Frances Jones, long-time resident of Waco and McLennan County, and teacher in the public schools, passed away Friday, July 31, 2009 in Arlington. Graveside services will at 10 a.m, Tuesday, August 4, in Lorena Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m., Monday, August 3, at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Funeral Home.

Mary Frances was born in Lorena, Texas, to the late Edward Lee and Ella Gooldy Jones. She graduated from Lorena High School after which she attended Baylor University where she received B.A. and M.S. degrees. She began her career at Robinson where she taught for two years. World War II intervened, and at that time she chose to spend the next two years in the war effort at Waco Army Air Field where she took care of orders and regulations that pertained to the maintenance of the planes based there. Eventually she returned to Baylor to obtain courses necessary to qualify as a librarian in the Waco school system. She then served as librarian at Brook Avenue Elementary School, Hillcrest and Crestview before retiring. All her work was done at the elementary level. Mary Frances enjoyed traveling in the United States and other countries during summer vacations. Bridge was her game of choice and she stayed connected with friends over the bridge table.

She also enjoyed writing poetry to commemorate important events in the lives of friends and neighbors. She was a member of two churches in her lifetime, both of which she loved dearly. The Lorena Methodist Church was where she first joined and where she grew and was nurtured by a loving church membership of friends and family. She later became a member of the Austin Avenue Methodist Church where she found opportunity for service in the church choir and library. She also delivered altar flowers to homebound members. At Austin Avenue she was a member of the Friendship Sunday School class where she was appointed Poet Laureate.

She was a member of the Epsilon Chi Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society, the Waco Classroom Teacher Association, The Emerson Club, the Lorena Cemetery Association, and the Mary Milam Garden Club. She held office at various times in most of these organizations.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Edward L. Jones Jr.

She is survived by her niece, Millicent "Fluffy" Jones; nephew, Edward L. "Buddy" Jones; sister-in-law, Millicent Jones; and cherished cousins.
