Surgeon and theatre proprietor. He studied medicine at St Thomas' Hospital, before becoming a surgeon in the Royal Navy and surgeon to the Italian Hospital in London. In his latter role, he entertained the King of Italy and became a Knight to the Crown of Italy. From the fortune he made, in 1904 he built the Scala Theatre in London, to the design of Frank Verity. This was used for showing early silent films such as "The Battle of the Somme" (1916), because he held the position of Director of Kinema Operations for the War Office.
