Ben moved to Tallahassee in 1951 from Georgetown, South Carolina, where he was the manager of Tomlinson's Dry Goods, a department store owned by his brother, Ulrich. He owned and operated Tomlinson Sundries on South Monroe Street. Later he owned Chevet's Photo Supplies in downtown Tallahassee and was co-owner of Chevet's North.

He was the son of Stoll Dana Tomlinson and Virginia Ann Williams Tomlinson; brother of Ulrich Chester Tomlinson, Harold Stoll Tomlinson, Hubert Wiliams Tomlinson, Cecil Fogel Tomlinson, Margaret Lennison Tomlinson (Thompson) and Helen Virginia Tomlinson (Whitesell). He was born in Olanta, South Carolina. He attended Clemson College and Gupton Jones Embalming School in Nashville, Tennessee.

Ben married Eleanor Woodham in 1937 and had a son and daughter. He married Dorothe Danley in 1964. After retirement he closed the downtown store and he and Dot made their home in Oyster Bay Estates in Wakulla County.

He was preceded in death by a grand-son, Michael Christopher Scarbrough, his brothers Harry, Hubert and Cecil and his sister Margaret. He was survived by his brother Ulrich and sister Helen, a son and a daughter from his first marriage, one grand-daughter, his current wife, Dorothe Danley Tomlinson and her children.
