City records show Mary's date of birth as August 23, 1886, while her headstone shows 1889 and the SSDI shows it as 28 July 1889. Whichever birth year is correct, we know Mary lived a relatively long life, and that she lost her father Valentine in 1890 with probably little or no memory of him.

Like her sister, my great grandma Rose, Mary would lead a convoluted youth in various mixed households, as her mother would lose three husbands, meaning Mary had two stepfathers and many half siblings.

Though Mary did not know her father for long, she did not forget him. The 1940 census shows Mary and her machinist husband August, their 12 year old newsboy son John, and their 26 year old coke plant fireman son, Valentine. (She also had a daughter Sophia in 1909/10.)

(Mary's son Valentine was born 31 Jan 1914 in Philadelphia PA, and died 25 Feb 1994 in Philadelphia, PA., last zip 19128 which is the Roxborough section of Philadelphia. Philadelphia marriage records show him as marrying Dolores M Guilfoyle in 1940, and it's known he had 3 daughters, one of whom was Valerie, so the old name lives on in another incarnation.)

Mary's last zip code on the SSDI is shown as 19428 which is in Conshohocken, a few miles up Ridge Pike from Roxborough.
