Moore, Richmond, VA, "I graduated in the Medical College State South Carolina in 1860, have served in the ranks of the army until my health is much impaired, having suffered long with Chronic Diarrhea and am not able to continue in that branch of the service and respectfully ask the humble position of Hospital Steward in some hospital for which I think I am qualified. Accompanying this I send testimonials of character and qualifications. Very Respectfully, B. F. Chambliss, Co. A. 14th Ga. Regt."
[At the bottom of the letter is the following: "We the undersigned certify that Dr. B. F. Chambless (sic - Chambliss) is a young man of moral character and industrious habits and therefore recommend him to the position for which he has applied.

10/27/1863 - In letter written to Surgeon General S. P. Moore by R. W. Folsom, Col., 14th GA Infantry, from a camp near Brandy Station, VA, Sir: I desire respectfully to recommend to your attention for the position of Hospital Steward Dr. B. F. Chambliss, a Private of Co. "A" of this Regt. Dr. Chambliss has now been serving in the ranks as a private for 18 months and has been attentive to his duties in that capacity. His health is now quite feeble and he desires, if possible, to obtain the above appointment in any regional Hospital in which there is a vacancy to be filled with a view both of conducive to his health by avoiding the experience incident to the life of a private soldier and also for the purpose of informing himself more thoroughly in the duties of a physician. He is a graduate of the Medical College of South Carolina located at Charleston & has engaged two years of active practice previous to the present war. He has sustained a good reputation for morality, sobriety etc. since his connection with this command & I am persuaded that he will use the position of Hospital Steward in an exceptional manner. I am Genl, Very respectfully, Your obdt servt, R. W. Folsom, Col. 14th Geo. Rgt." [Note: Col. Folsom was a physician before the war and died, May 24th, 1864 after being mortally wounded at the Battle of the Wilderness.]
11/06/1863 - "Private B. F. Chambliss of Company "A", 14th Regiment Georgia Volunteers is appointed Hospital Steward and will report to the Surgeon General in this city [Richmond, VA] for assignment to duty " [S. O. 264/6]
11/20/1863 - In a note written by Surgeon Kinloch, Acting Medical Director of General Hospitals, Charleston, SC, to Brig. Gen. Thomas Jordan, Chief of Staff, Charleston, SC, "Sir, Hospital Steward B. F. Chambliss, having reported at this Office, pursuant to orders from the Surgeon General, I respectfully suggest that he be assigned to duty at Wayside Hospital at Kingsville, S.C. to report to Surgeon J. A. Pleasants in charge of the same. I have the honor to remain, Sir, Very respectfully, Your Obdt Svt, R Kinloch, Actg. Med. Director Gen. Hospitals
