Robert Vern Coen, Sr., 78, of Mtn. Grove, Missouri, passed away on Monday, July 20, 2009, at Willow Care Nursing Home in Willow Springs, Missouri, where spent the last year of his life.

He was born on August 8, 1930 in Mattoon, Illinois, the son of Arthur Ennis and Nancy Irene (Varner) Coen.

Robert was united in marriage to Lila Irene Bilyeu on October 16, 1948, and to this union nine children were born: five sons and four daughters. In 1966, the family moved from Decatur, Illinois, to Mtn. Grove, Missouri, where he would live for 42 years.

Robert was a retired mechanic for the City of Cabool. He served in the U.S. Air Force in 1948. He had also worked for ADM in Decatur and as a mason's hod carrier, roofer and a farmer. His hobbies included spending time with his family especially in his latter years, hunting, building items from materials around his farm, visiting with friends, and playing stringed music instruments.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Lila Coen; one son, William N. "Bill" Coen; and one daughter, Barbara L. (Coen) Pilcher.

He is survived by his seven children, Linda Skaggs of St. Louis, Missouri, Robert Coen, Jr. and wife Tina of Nacogdoches, Texas, Arthur Coen and wife Elda of Flat Rock, Michigan, Sandra Noakes and husband Perry of Springfield, Missouri, Oran Coen and wife Patricia of Cabool, Missouri, Alfred Coen and wife Patsy of Mtn. Grove, and Marilyn Ambrose of Concordia, Missouri; three sisters, Joyce Golden of Bethany, Illinois, Margaret Clark of Blue Mound, Illinois, and Francis Kramer of Decatur, Illinois; three brothers, Richard Coen of Delta, Pennsylvania, Oran Coen of Macon, Illinois, and Everett Coen and wife Dorothy of Charlton, South Carolina; 35 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Services were at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 25, 2009, in Elliott-Gentry-Carder Funeral Home's chapel. Pallbearers were Robert, Jr., Arthur L., Sr., Oran T. and Alfred Coen. Honorary pallbearers were Garland and Gregory Armstrong, Craig D. Coen, Vince and Kevin Ambrose, Brad Coen, Chad A. Coen, Adam M. Coen, Joshua K. Coen, Arthur L. Coen, Jr., Billy Coen and Bradley R. Pilcher. Interment was in Cabool Cemetery under the direction of Elliott-Gentry-Carder Funeral Home of Cabool.
