Wife of John Jacob McVay (1759-1826). I believe Sarah came with her family from Morris County, New Jersey to Washington County, Pennsylvania between 1773 and 1777. She married John Jacob McVay on February 17, 1780 in Washington County, Pennsylvania. Sarah was the mother of 11 children with John McVay including: Mary (McVay) Brandon, Jacob McVay, Phoebe (McVay) Jennings, Sarah (McVay) Clutter, John McVay, Rebecca (McVay) Draper, Samuel McVay, Charity (McVay) Van Dyke, Abraham McVay, Isaac McVay and Ruth McVay. Her husband was a Revolutionary War patriot who fought for the 1st Battalion, Pennsylvania Militia under Capt. John Miller and Col. Henry Enoch. Sarah was the daughter of John Rude and Sarah (Benger) Rude. (Her maiden name is sometimes also listed as "Rood" which was the spelling that seems to have been used by her grandfather, however, her father lists his name as "Rude" in the 1800 census.)

The followingis an exerpt from her husband's will:

"Funeral expenses and all debts to be paid. To my wife 1/3 of personal property. To sons Abraham, Samuel, Isaac 50 acres of land each. To daughter Ruth 1 cow and 4 sheep. To grandson Cephas Brandon $2.00. Remainder of personal property to daughters Phoebe Jennings, Sarah Clutter, Rebecca Draper, Charity Van Dyke, and Ruth McVay. Remainder to be divided equally among executors. Witnessed 25 Sep 1824. Executors: Jacob and Abraham McVay. Witnesses: William Lindley and Pamelia Squier." (Will Book, Washington County, Pennsylvania].
