On April 22, 1918 he married Lucy Syfan in Abbeville, Abbeville County, South Carolina. She was born October 15, 1897 in Hodges, Greenwood County, South Carolina to George William Syfan and Nina Augusta Isaacs Syfan and died February 20, 1919 in Gainesville, Georgia. Ralph Merck died on February 22, 1919 in Gainesville and was buried next to his wife and stillborn daughter, Evelyn, in Alta Vista Cemetery, Gainesville. Both Ralph and Lucy died of Spanish influenza followed by pneumonia.
