Elsbury E. Applegate

Elsbury Evans Applegate, son of Flanders and Mary Anne Applegate, was born in Crawfordsville, Ind, on July 5, 1854, and departed this life at Des Moines on March 1, 1933, age 78 years, 7 months and 26 days.

His parents moved to Iowa in the fall of 1855, spending the winter in Fairfield, and moving to a farm in Marion county the following spring.

Mr. Applegate was united in marriage to Miss Mary Estelle Mason on April 18, 1880. Unto them five children were born, Miss Ethel Applegate of Chicago, Mrs. Beverly Shive of Los Angeles, Calif., Cress C. Applegate of Hollywood, Calif., Mrs. Morris Vehon of Chicago, and Ansel, who died at the age of 18 months. The mother preceded her husband in death in 1912.

In the year 1915 Mr. Applegate was married to Mrs. Dora Todd of Attica. They moved to Anaheim, Calif., where the deceased spent twelve years.

He will be remembered by all of his old friends and neighbors as a man of high integrity and many pleasing qualities.

He is survived by his wife and the four children, one grandchild, Morris Vahon jr., one grandchild, Ivan Dale Shive, died at the age of 18 years. He is also survived by the following brothers and sisters, I. W. Applegate of Attica, Mrs. Salina Flanagan of Knoxville, C. D. Applegate of Attica, and Mrs. D. C. Belknap of Knoxville. Within the past year the Judge J. H. Applegate and Mrs. H. A. Overton preceded their brother in death.

The funeral service was held on Friday, March 3, at 2:30 in the Bybee & Davis funeral home. E. L. Stone, paster of the Methodist Episcopal church of Knoxville, conducted the service. Interment was made in the Graceland cemetery.
