James was adopted at the age of 7 by Homer Franklin Cook and Missie Ardell Sheperd Cook. James attended school in Alma and graduated from Alma High School. He received a hardship discharge from the US Army so he could continue to work on the family farm in Alma. James and Irene married August 18, 1946 and had two daughters, Linda Sue and Jimmie Louise. After graduating from Draughons School of Business, James worked at Colonial Bread Company for several years before he began his career in lawn/garden at McKee Garden Center.
James died at the age of 72 in a Fort Smith hospital.
