Mr. Morrell enlisted as a private in the 21st Ohio Infantry Co. A in 1861. He was promoted during his field service to 1st sgt. He took part in most of the 21st's toughest battles, including Stone's River and Chickamauga. He was shot in the face July 9, 1864 as his company stormed the Chattahootche River bridge near Atlanta. He died the next day at Vining Station, Georgia.
