Death of Mr. Thos. J. Ashcraft.

Mr. Thomas J. Ashcraft died at his home in Marshville township last Thursday morning. The remains were buried at Bethel church. For the past two years he was confined to his home, gradually losing his strength, sight and hearing. For the past three weeks he was confined to his bed, all of his faculties rapidly declining. He was nearly 83 years old and lived his long life near the place of his birth. Mr. Ashcraft was a man who lived a quiet, peaceful life; in the days of his strength looking after his farm and mill, but for a number of years he had taken no active part in business affairs. His wife died about twenty-one years ago. he and his only son, Mr. V. A. Ashcraft, made their home together. As a man and a citizen Mr. Ashcraft was esteemed by all who knew him. He was a big hearted man, touched by every appeal of distress. Many a person needing bread has been furnished flour and meal from his bins. Many times the minister of the gospel has had a coin pressed into his hand from the purse of this good man, with the injunction to say nothing about it. His crowing virtue was charity. He was a true Confederate soldier.

Mr. Ashcraft leaves one son, Mr. V. A. Ashcraft, and one daughter, Mrs. Mary McNutt of Texas. Mr. F. B. Ashcraft of Monroe is a brother and Mrs. Jane Bivens of Wingate is a sister of the deceased.
