James' middle name, Irving, was given in a biography published in Colorado for his daughter, Ida Florence Gilmore. I believe James Irving Gilmore was born October 1830, not 1831 as given on the person who ordered his military tombstone. On the 1900 census, James gave his date of birth as October 1830 and I believe I have seen this same year on his military records. There was another biography in Colorado on Ida's brother, Thomas Edgar Gilmore, that also gave his father as James Irving Gilmore (I suspect the same person wrote this biography). I have copies of a book called History of the House of Ochiltree written in 1916 by Clementine Brown Railey and she, too, gave James' middle name as James Irving Gilmore (I believe this book may be online) (google James Irving Gilmore without any quotes).
