Mr. Barnwell operated an AMOCO Service Station in Topeka for many years before he retired in 1987. He also served 20 years in the Air Force, and retired at the rank of Staff Sergeant.
He was born May 8, 1929, at Crossville, Tenn., the son of Paul and Clara Mae Wyatt Barnwell. He attended school in Crossville.
He was married to Faye Thornburgh on July 20, 1964, at Crossville, Tenn. She survives.
Other survivors include three sons, Austin W. Barnwell, Carbondale, Craig L. Barnwell, Emporia, and Bryan A. Barnwell, Charlotte, N.C.; two daughters, Alice Polson, Crossville, Tenn., and Janell Hill, Carbondale; a sister, Myrtle Rogers, Crossville, Tenn.; and 14 grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Burlingame Federated Church in Burlingame.
Burial with military graveside services conducted by an Air Force Honor Guard will be at the Burlingame Cemetery.
Mr. Barnwell will lie in state after 4 p.m. Monday at the Carey Funeral Home in Burlingame, where relatives and friends will meet from 7 to 8 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Center for Basic Cancer Research at Kansas State University, or to the Burlingame Federated Church, and sent in care of the funeral home.
