Jane Harden was born in the Arkansas Ozarks in 1892 to James Bird Deatherage and Sarah Mahala Burnett Deatherage. She was one of 9 children.
She married at the age of 14 to Robert Lafayette Cannon and they had three children, Elsie Mae Cannon Bennett Getman, Loy Leslie Cannon, and Addie "Lee" Cannon Howell. Jane and Robert moved from Arkansas to Idaho to Oregon and eventually landed in Glendale, CA. where they later divorced.
Jane worked as a civilian cook at the US Army Camp Cook (now Vandenberg AFB). It was there that she met Lloyd Harden, also a cook, whom she later married.
They moved to Ojai, CA and opened up their own restaurant called "The Goody Shop." Jane was the baker and Lloyd the fry cook. They worked there together until Lloyd's death.
Jane was a famous cook and one of her best-loved recipes was "slickers," the Arkansas version of Chicken and Dumplings.
