Thomas Dolphus Bickham was born near Franklinton and married Cenderilla Smith Bickham (1856 - 1950)* at age 17.

Thomas was a father and Confederate private at the age 18, sheriff of Washington Parish at 34 and ultimately the father of 17 children. He was elected sheriff of Washington Parish in 1878 and served 8 years. He also served as Washington Parish treasurer. He was the owner of the New Era, a Franklinton newspaper, and was a Master Mason for over 20 years. Thomas served in the CSA during the Civil War and also the US Cavalry as a young man.
