George F. Rowell was born in July of 1829 in Vermont and died on June 22, 1908 at the age of 79 in Newport, Stevens County, Washington. He married Sarah Adelia Coon (born in August of 1839 in New York, daughter of George and Eunice Coon and died on May 7, 1924 at the age of 84 in Newport, Stevens County, Washington).

George F. Rowell was a Sergeant in the Company E 23 Wisconsin Infantry Regiment in Mazomanie, Wisconsin, enlisted in on August 14, 1862, was promoted to Brevet Captain on December 29, 1862, received a disability discharge and mustered out on August 8, 1863.

Service:

This 23rd Infantry Regiment was organized at Camp Randall, Madison, WI in August of 1862 and left the state September 15 for Cincinnati where it was ordered south to join the army at Vicksburg.

It was with General Sherman in the assault on Chickasaw Bluffs and assisted in the reduction of Arkansas Post. It then proceeded to Young's Point, LA, near Vicksburg, where three-fourths of the men were stricken with virulent diseases because of diverse sanitary conditions.

The Regiment was on scout and foraging work until April 30, 1863. It was brought into reserve at Port Gibson and entered the village the following day – the first Union troops to occupy it. It took the advance of the division at Champion's Hill doing such effective work as to call forth compliments from the general commanding.

The following day it went into action at the Black River Bridge, its brigade capturing the 60th Tennessee and carrying the enemy's work by assault. It reached Vicksburg on the 18th, and participated in the general assault on the 22nd, reaching the base of one of the forts under heavy fire. It was on duty until the surrender, at which time losses has reduced its number to 150 men who were fit for duty.
