Son of William Cain and Mary Polly Mason CainCorp Richard Cain, Co K, 22 INF VOL SC, SC took part in the Battle of the Crater in which the union forces set off a hugh explosion killing his two brothers Pvt Aaron and Pvt Joel Cain very early on the morning of July 30, 1864. Union forces immedistely charged into the hugh Crater only to be trapped in the Crater to be killed in large numbers by Corp Cain and the other brave soldiers serving in Corp Cain's SC regiment and other brave confederates comrads. It was a Southern victory union forces having been turned back. But it came at a high price for Corp Cain and the brave 22 SC INF VOL REG, CSA.
