Mrs. Michael Hogan passed from this life at her home in Corning, Wednesday, June 21, 1916, at 10:45 in the morning, after an illness of several months. She was aged 73 years, 6 months and 12 days. Funeral services were held at St. Patrick's Catholic church Saturday morning at 10 o'clock. Solemn High mass was celebrated by Rev. Father Richard Dollard, of Corning, assisted by Rev. Father Quinn, of Council Bluffs. Interment was made in Calvary cemetery, beside her husband, who had preceded her in death, passing away the 24th of July, 1913.
Mary Collins, daughter of John Collins and Catherine Curtain Collins, was born December 8, 1842, in the parish of Barthelmy, county Cork, Ireland. When about 12 years of age she with her parents, came to America, locating at Ft. Covington, N.Y., where they remained until 1852, when they came to Dubuque county, Iowa.
April 7, 1863, Miss Collins was married to Michael Hogan, in St. Clements Catholic church, Bankston. Rev. Father Dolrew Bennett performed the ceremony. Mr. and Mrs. Hogan began housekeeping near Farley, where they remained until the spring of 1870, when they located on a farm in Mercer township, which consisted of 160 acres of land and a small house. This has been added to until it now has 400 acres of land and good buildings.
To Mr. and Mrs. Hogan eleven children were born, ten of whom are living. One daughter, Julia, died when about 13 years of age. The living children are: John H. Hogan, residing in Mercer township; Michael Hogan, Moccasin, Montana; Dennis, of Massena; J. Joseph and Louis K., Corning; Edward, in Mercer township; Sister Mary Clotilda, Ottumwa; Thos. F. Hogan, of Mercer township; Mrs. Catherine Sisson, Hobson, Mont.; Mrs. Margaret Fringer, Great Falls, Mont. All of the children with the exception of Michael, were here to attend the funeral. Of a family of twelve children Mrs. Hogan leaves only two brothers, Michael and Cornelius Collins, of Woodbury county. Cornelius was here to attend the services. She also leaves a number of nieces and nephews of whom the following were here: John Collins, Mrs. Maggie Collins, W. Harrigan, of Woodbury county; Mrs. Catherine Pinns and son Nicholas, of Dubuque; J. Morris, of Madison county.
When Mr. and Mrs. Hogan located in Mercer township there were only two families in their vicinity, only three being in the township. In 1905 Mr. Hogan retired from the farm and located in Corning in a home on Grove avenue, where he and his wife spent the remainder of their lifetime and passed away.
In 1913 Mr. and Mrs. Hogan celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on the home farm. Mrs. Hogan was a friend, a good neighbor and had a very large circle of friends who will regret her passing away. She was one of the cheerful souls who brighten life's way with a smile and a kindly deed, and whom to know is to admire.
