Mabel Elizabeth 'Babe' Acord

Mabel Elizabeth "Babe" Acord, 86, of Beaver, passed away Saturday, May 17, 2008, at the Raleigh Care Center.

Born Dec. 25, 1921, at Lansing, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Clowney and Ruby Puckett Carte.

Throughout her life, Babe was a school cook at Oceana Grade School, waitress at Peoples Drug Store in Woodbridge, Va., and devoted wife and mother. She was a faithful member of Bethel Freewill Baptist Church, Crab Orchard, W.Va., and a member of the Ladies Auxiliary. She enjoyed spending her time with her family, cooking, and visiting shut-ins with the church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Willis Acord; her grandson, James "Jim" Bench Jr.; her brothers, Harold and Adam Carte; and three sisters, Lucille Thompson, Freda Gillespie and Delma Wooten.

Those left to cherish her memory are her son, Larry Acord and wife, Linda, of Tawas City, Mich.; her daughter, Sharon Bench and husband, James, of St. Petersburg, Fla.; her son, Michael "Mike" Acord and wife, Sue, of Crab Orchard, and her son, William "Bill" Acord and wife, Sandy, of Beaver; her grandchildren, Carla Fernandez of Tampa, Fla., Michelle Novak and husband, Russell, of Kenneth City, Fla., Christopher Acord and wife, Danielle, of Madison, N.C., Jamie Lawrence and husband, Sean, of Madison, N.C., Mindy Smith and husband, David, of Beaver, and Shannon Morris and husband, James; her great-grandchildren, Kent Smith and Deven Fernandez of Tampa, Fla., Amber and Elizabeth Bench of St. Petersburg, Fla., Jimmy and Rianna Novak of Kenneth City, Fla., Taylor and Tylor Lawrence of Madison, N.C., Cooper Acord of Madison, N.C., Ellanore Smith of Beaver and Kristian Morris; her dear sister, Mildred Hicks of Crab Orchard; her many nieces and nephews, friends and neighbors.

Service will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Bethel Freewill Baptist Church, Crab Orchard, with the Rev. Bill Calhoun officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home, Beckley, and at the church one hour prior to the service.

Pallbearers will be family and friends.
