According to the census of 1900, he and his family lived in the Forest Magistrate District. They had a total of fourteen children, ten of which were living at home when the census was taken. He worked as a sharecropper. Neither he nor his wife could read or write.
At the time of his death he farmed and lived on the land that is now McVeigh Road, just off Leesville Road in Lynchburg, Virginia. He was sitting on his front porch in his rocking chair talking to his children and grandchildren when he is said to have jumped up, clutched his chest and fell to the porch dead.

Children: Josephine, Augusta Frances, Viles, Molly, Issac, Frank Jackson, Sarah, Burnett unnamed, Ellis Moorman, Rosa B., Frances Elizabeth, Nona Burton, and Alice.
