Effie Jane Chester was a hard worker and loved to cook. Effie was skilled at "taking nothing and making a feast from it." The era in which they lived demanded.

Effie taught Alice how to feed her family by cooking economically. Alice's biscuits were the best. Watching Mur move about in her kitchen and work with her hands was the same as watching Effie. While making chicken pies, peach cobblers, biscuits or any other dish Effie would talk and sing, "Get out the way old Dan Tucker..." This is how Effie taught Alice. (They had a lot of music in their house.)

Effie "lost her mind" when her husband died, according to Alice. Of course we know now it was probably Alzheimers Disease. They did not know how to effectively diagnose it, treat it or how to care for those suffering from it at that time. Many people were hospitalized in Broughton as Effie was.

In public documents, I found several names used for Effie; Ellin, Sophia, and Essie.
