We regret to announce the passing of Mrs. Mary Ellen Thursby, age 82, of Donalsonville, GA who passed away Sunday, July 19, 2009 at her residence.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 23, 2009, at 10:00 AM at Reynolds Chapel United Methodist Church with interment to follow in Spring Creek Baptist Church Cemetery in Donalsonville, GA with Rev. Johnny Shepard, Rev. Wendell Hollingsworth, and Rev. Donna Sue Roberts officiating. Visitation will be held on Wednesday evening, June 22, 2009 from 7:00-9:00 PM at the chapel of Evans-Skipper Funeral Home.
Mrs.Thursby was born in Donalsonville, GA on May 26, 1927 to the late Ed and Ellen Hatton Burke. She was married to Joseph J. Thursby, Sr. on October 5, 1946. She returned to Donalsonville, Georgia after the passing of her husband in 1968. Mrs. Thursby enjoyed gardening and was known for her crocheting and quilting. She attended Reynolds Chapel United Methodist Church and was a homemaker.
She leaves to cherish her memory her children, Sara Stoetzel and her husband Dave of Oak Ridge, TN, Joseph J. Thursby, Jr of Donalsonville, GA, Robert Thursby and his wife Wynona of Cairo, GA, and Rebecca Thursby Sander and her husband Mark Solomon of Donalsonville, GA; two sisters, Ada Conyers and her husband MJ of Donalsonville, GA and Rosa Lee Donalson of Bainbridge, GA; six grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She is also survived by three sisters-in-law, Lucille Rangel, Grace Thursby, and Alice Tharpe all of Donalsonville, GA..
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ed and Ellen Hatton Burke; her husband, Joseph J. Thursby, Sr.; a brother, Ed June Burke; and a sister, Clara Johnson. .
Active casketbearers will be Ricky Thursby, Buddy Johnson, DeWayne Conyers, William Conyers, Dick Lay, and Gene Burke. Honorary casketbearers will be Dr. Charles Walker, Neal Murphy,J.W. Warriner, Bobby Thursby, Rev. Curtis Earnest, Cecil McDonald, and David McLendon.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Visiting Nurses Association PO Box 1287 Bainbridge, GA 39819 or to the family in care of Joseph J. Thursby, Jr. 2284 Hwy 253 Donalsonville, GA 39845.
