John W. Morgan Dies; Operated Cleaning Plant
John Wesley Morgan, 87, who formerly operated a dry cleaning plant on East Main Street, died at 4:10 p.m. Tuesday in Franklin hospital at Benton after an illness of three years.
Morgan, who resided on Highway 149, west of this city, was born at Dover, Tenn., the son of John H. and Nancy Wallace Morgan. He married Lillie Wilson, October 18, 1907, at Pinckneyville. They celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary in October, 1965.
He was a member of the First Church of God in this city.
At the age of nine months, Morgan came with his parents by barge from Dover, Tenn., to Shawneetown and then by oxen drawn covered wagon to a farm northwest of this city. He resided there until he was 21 years of age, when he moved to Herrin and later to Johnston City, where he operated a general store during World War I. He operated Morgan Cleaners in this city for 37 years and retired in 1954.
He is survived by his wife, Lillie; four daughters, Mrs. John Chornak and Miss LIllian Morgan of this city; Mrs. Irene Price of Belleville and Mrs. Justine James of East Chicago, Ind.; a son, Jack Morgan of this city; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday by Rev. B. Robert Glidewell, pastor of the First Church of God, at the Reedy funeral home. Interment will be in Denning cemetery, near Orient.
The body will lie in state after 6 p.m. today at thefuneral home.
