May 8 1827: Marriage to Susan Lusk, Mississippi-
"At which time the country was new and comparatively a wilderness. Lived there and prospered". By Miles Vance Smith, a son.

1846: Merrill and a host of immigrants moved to DeWitt County, Texas and settled near Hell's Gate, on the Guadalupe River, "A wild and reckless country at that time". By Miles Vance Smith, a son.

1850: Moved back to Carroll, Mississippi.

1853: Moved to DeWitt County, Texas.

Before 1860: The family moved to Hallettsville, Lavaca County, Texas and were very active in the Baptist Church. Merrill was a mason there, also in Mississippi.

Other Children: Brandon Davidson Smith (served in Whitfield's Legion Co., M27th Calvary during the Civil War; Robert Lusk Smith, (served in Co A, 12 TX Infantry during the Civil War), FAG #22560922; William L Smith; Miles Vance Smith (served in Co D 4th TX Regiment Hood's Brigade, Lonstreet's Corps, Army Northern VA during the Civil War); William Harrison Smith (served in Co A, 13 TX Infantry during the Civil War)and Silas C. Smith (served in Whitfield's Legion, Co M , 27th Tx Calvary during the Civil War. Died of sunstroke while fighting in the Battle of Pea Ridge, Arkansas).

Gravesite Details

Originally the Old City Cemetery, now known as Hallettsville Memorial Park. They share a monument about six feet tall, with the top part missing.
