WILMINGTON -- Vonnye Rae Parker, 78, of Wilmington died Tuesday, May 19, 2009, at her home surrounded by family and friends. Vonnye "Momma Bear" loved her family. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother, friend and a giver to all. Her special gifts were being a good listener and an avid gardener.
Born in Columbus County in 1930, her parents were the late I. T. Long and Annie Belle Stocks Long. Vonnye is survived by her sons, John B. Parker, Jr. and wife, Beth, Jeffrey T. Parker and wife, Robin and Kenneth R. Parker and wife, Toni; daughters, Kathy Zachary Long and husband, Tony, and Sandra Parker Young and husband, Mike, all of Wilmington; grandchildren, Jessica Young, Haley Parker, Rachel Zachary and Parker Zachary. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband of 52 years, John B. 'J.B.' Parker, Sr. in 2002.
The funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, May 22, 2009, in the chapel of Coble Ward-Smith Funeral Home, 3915 Oleander Drive, officiated by Mr. Robert C. Phillips. Interment will follow in Oleander Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends this evening from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM at the funeral home.
Vonnye's family extends a special thanks to Dr. Gajewski and the staff of the Zimmer Cancer Center and to the staff of Lower Cape Fear Hospice Center.
