William Joseph Blackwell was a son of Jesse Thomas Blackwell (1832-1901) and Nancy Mariea Kesse-Blackwel (1826-1924).

Marriage 1: Ada L Polk (1869-1888)- married on 15 December 1885 in Lockhart, Caldwell County, Texas. Ada died in 1888 and is buried in the Blackwell Family Cemetery. They had at least one son before Ada died: Joseph Vernon Blackwell who married Mary Katherine "Katie" Tate and had several children.

Marriage 2: Etta Culp/Kolp (1874-1954) - married on 19 Decebmer 1890 in Lockhart, Caldwell County, Texas and had at least two children: William Carl Blackwell and Mattie Ray Blackwell.
