Lou Anna was the daughter of John Sutherland CLARK (1833-1910) and Frances CLARKSON (b. abt 1836). She was known as "Anna." In 1879, she married Solomon HUFFORD in Modoc County, California. With Solomon, she had eight children; seven of those eight children reached maturity.

The marriage ended in divorce, and she secondly married Frederick A. GARDELL in 1899 in Pierce County, Washington. With Frederick, she had two more children.
