This is my maternal great grandfather. He lived in Wing, Illinois for many years. His father died when the 3 boys in the family were teenagers. He and his brothers helped run the farm for their mother. Two of the brothers never left the county and lived and died close to where they were raised. The 3rd one moved West.

Grandpa Perrine was named for his mother's brother T.L.H. Holman. The name is after a respected Ohio Congressman, Thomas L. Hamer, who accidentally changed U.S. Grant's name to Ulysses Simpson Grant from Hiram Ulysses Grant when he appointed him to West Point. The name stuck, and Grant was forever known as U.S. Grant.

Mom said her grandfather was a very nice man. After Mom's mother died, Thomas and his wife Laura had all 3 of the children spend weekends with them in the nearby town of Wing, where they lived. (See the picture of their home to the right. It has been remodeled over the years, but basically looks the same. Mom said they would sit on the front steps and play. There used to be a railing all the way around the porch, but it has been removed.)

I know the 3 kids dearly loved their grandparents. These grandparents had lost their only daughter, Nellie, who was the mother of these 3 children. She died in childbirth, along with her newborn daughter. I think having their daughter's children with them helped ease their sorrow.

Grandpa Perrine's pictures show him as a white-haired man who sill had all his hair. He had a mustache too. As soon as I can, I hope to post pictures of my great-grandparents. Family stories say that he had red hair as a young man, and both his children also had red hair, as well as both his brothers. None of the grandchildren that came along later were red-haired, but all were very blond.

"Wing News---
The pleasant home of T. Perrine was invaded by friends Wednesday night. The host was presented with a handsome easy chair." (I would guess they surprised him for his birthday celebration.)

Rest in peace dear great grandfather Perrine.
