George was born in Centre Co., Penn on June 25,1839 the son of Jesse W. Burd and Henrietta Orwig Burd. By 1856 he was living in Jackson Co., Iowa.
George Washington Burd (Bird) enrolled June 24,1861 as a 22 yr. old at Bellevue, Jackson Co., Ia. in the company that was to become Co. I, 5th Iowa Infantry. He accompanied the group down the Mississippi River by barge to Burlington, Ia. and marched out to the city limits to go into bivouac at Camp Warren. According to George M.T. Ditto, a diarist in Co. I, "Bird, along with Everet Usher, ____ Davenport, John Blusch, and Anthony Weinberger refused to fall in to be mustered into U.S. service at 3 P.M. July 16,1861. Their uniforms were stripped from them and they were drummed out of camp. The rest of the company was mustered in the next morning at 10 A.M.". Bird was listed as rejected July 17,1861 by the mustering officer.
George was in Graitis, Lafayette Co., Wis. on Sept.7,1862 when he married Miss Samantha Amanda Vandervort.
They soon moved back to Illinois where George registered for the draft on July 1,1863 while living at Courtland, Jo Davies, Co., Il.
On Sept.2,1864 25 yr. old George enlisted, with his older brother 27 yr. old Benjamin F. Burd, at Dixon, Il. in Co. E, 146th Illinois Infantry. He lists his residence as Freeport, Stephenson Co., Il., occupation - Cooper, 5'8 3/4", Brown hair, blue eyes, and a fair complexion. He had enlisted for one year and was mustered out at Camp Butler, Springfield, Il. on July 8,1865.
George filed for an invalid pension on March 19,1883 and received certificate # 495.207.
He died on March 7,1914 and his widow filed for a pension on March 28,1914, receiving certificate # 778.001.
