Peleg S. Staples, son of John Benson Staples and Susanna S. Blake of Hancock Co. ME, was a soldier in the Civil War. He enlisted as a Pvt. in the Company E, 19th Maine Infantry Volunteers in July 1862. He was detached to the 1st Rhode Island Artillery, Battery B, from Dec. 1862 to June 1864 and was wounded in the foot while manning Battery B during Pickett's Charge at the Battle of Gettysburg. After returning to the 19th Maine, he was wounded at Hatcher's Run on Oct. 27, 1864, and on October 28, 1864, was sent to the 2d Division, 2d Army Corps Depot Field Hospital at City Point, VA, where he was stayed until February 14, 1865. He was transported on the U.S.A. Hospital Steamer "State of Maine" [fitting for a soldier from Maine]with "inflammation of the conjunctiva" to Point Lookout, MD, where he arrived February 15, 1865. Mr. Staples was in the U.S. General Hospital at Point Lookout, MD from Feb. 21, 1865 through June 15, 1865. Peleg S. Staples, Private, Company E, 19th Regt. Maine Infantry, age 18 yrs., appears on the Company Muster-Out Roll dated Baileys Cross Roads, VA, May 31, 1865. The shell wound to his head impaired the vision in his left eye.

Peleg Staples was buried in an unmarked grave "under the apple trees" in the side yard of his home on Brooke Road, Stafford Co. VA. His wife, Mary Ella Griffin, two sons and a daughter were buried there as well. None of the graves are marked.

VA [burial place unknown]; and parents to Amy H. Staples, born 31 Jan 1875 in Stockton Springs, ME; died 5 Mar 1875 [buried in Maine].
