Dr. Long was the first president of the Bradley County Medical Society. He graduated from the University of Nashville Medical School in 1855 and began his practice in Cleveland the same year.

He was a leading member of the Southern Methodist Church, a trustee of Cententary College, and president of the Bank of Charleston from 1892 until his death in 1894.

His death was announced in the Cleveland Herald: "The community was shocked Sunday morning by a telegram from Jas. E. Mayfield announcing that Dr. G. A. Long had died on the train just before Atlanta on his return from Florida. The doctor had a large amount of stock in a National Bank at Orlando, Florida, but the bank failed last summer, and he and his attorney, Mr. Mayfield, had been down there on business connected with the bank. They were on their way home when the doctor died."
