Thelma Carroll Teachey Klutz, 85, of Wilmington, NC, died Tuesday, April 21, 2009, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
She was born May 15, 1923, in Duplin County, NC, youngest of four siblings. She spent the first 14 years of her life on the farm her parents operated...only back then you "worked" a farm, as did the kids and a whole bunch of farmhands. It was generally thought that Thelma did very little farm-wise, being petite, blonde and pretty bossy herself. Her mother died on May 15, 1937, Thelma's 14th birthday. After her mother's death, Thelma's only companions were housemaids and field hands while her father spent more and more time away from the farm, hunting. Her sisters had married and moved to Carolina Beach and in a short time took Thelma into their homes, helping them with their children; a time in her life she often spoke about as most happy. She spoke of having nail polish for the first time in her life provided by loving sisters and her very first watch given to her by Wallace Schley, her sister, Pauline's husband. Both Pauline and Mattie took her on several trips with them on the Seaboard Coastline Railroad of Wilmington, NC.
Thelma met Earl Klutz through her sister, Mattie, who had dated him before she was married, and they had a short romance before marrying in 1941. Thelma was 18; Earl was 23. Shortly after they married, World War II separated them for three years. Thelma's children have a whole trunk of letters between the two, as well as Earl's family and friends that Earl saved during those years. Thelma spent those years working in the shipyards in Wilmington as a welder building Liberty Ships. Very shortly after Earl returned home, their first child, Carol, was born. Following Carol and within ten years came Linda, Edward (Ed), Terry, and Cheryl. In 1952, shortly after the birth of Edward, Thelma and Earl bought "The Beacon Grill", located just a short distance south of the drawbridge at Snow's Cut. After a few months of running the grill, Earl closed it and built walls inside of it, transforming it into a home for the growing family. He returned to construction work, having decided running a restaurant was not for him. His favorite work was piers, bridges, and bulkheads. Thelma toted lunch to him every day he worked near home. The children got to play at the beach while they sat on a blanket chatting. Thelma sometimes took three mayonnaise jars full of iced tea in the summer months for him to drink. By the early sixties, five children had driven Thelma to find an occupation. Her doctor advised she and Earl that it was in everyone's best interests for Thelma to work outside the home. She enrolled in Troutman's Beauty School and began a lifetime styling hair at the Hanover Center Beauty Salon where she worked until age. 73, when she retired. Thelma lost her beloved husband, Earl in 1974 and never remarried.
She was s Sunday School teacher and faithful member of Community Church of Carolina Beach for most of her life.
Surviving are five children, Carol Klutz Nash (Larry) of Carolina Beach, Linda Klutz Dowdy (Jim) of Wilmington, Edward Earl Klutz (Diane) of Carolina Beach, Terry Ray Klutz of Oxford, NC, and Cheryl Klutz Reavis of Asheville, NC; nine grandchildren, Wendy Nash Yadao, Heidi Nash Young, Bobbi Nash Hobbs, Amanda Klutz Brown, Eva Marie Klutz, Thomas Earl Klutz, Kelly Klutz Windfree, and Melissa Reavis; and nine great-grandchildren. A grandson, John Jesse Farrow preceded her in death.
A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, April 25, 2009, at Seaside Chapel, Carolina Beach, NC. The Rev. Andrew Pasedag will officiate. Interment will follow at Federal Point Cemetery.
