The son of John & Lydia (Moore) Reynolds and older brother of Rear Admiral William F. Reynolds and Maj. Gen. John Fulton Reynolds, he married Elizabeth Vanhorn December 31, 1857, in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, although they apparently had no children or at least any who survived. In 1860, he was a wealthy iron master living with Elizabeth at McCall's Ferry, Lower Chanceford Township, York County.
During the Civil War, he enlisted and mustered into federal service March 11, 1863, and assigned to the U.S. Volunteers Paymaster Department at the rank of major. On March 13, 1865, he was brevetted lieutenant colonel for reasons that had more to do who his family was than any military accomplishment on his part and honorably discharged March 31, 1866.
After the war, he moved to Philadelphia where he became involved in the insurance industry.
