Tribute to Memory of W E Harris

I wish to pay tribute of love and respect to the memory of William E Harris, for Cooper County has lost one of her best citizens, his family a loving husband, father and brother, his church a faithful member, and a county a good officer.

In all the years I knew him, I never heard him speak disparagingly of anyone, for he was a gentleman of the old school, and his meek, kindly and Christian life caused all who knew him to have only the highest regard and love for his memory.

Having known him for many years and part of the time closely associated with him in an official way, I always found him square, conscientious and honest in every transaction, and his constant fear was that he would do something that would hurt someone's feelings, or that he might not perform his official duties just exactly as they should be, and thereby be at fault, and his greatest endeavor was to treat all honestly, fairly and justly.

If I were writing the epitaph of William E Harris, I would write "Here lies one who was an honest, conscientious, God-fearing man who lived his Christianity."
