James was the second sheriff of Hamilton County, TX, serving from 1862--1864.

Suggested edit: Death notice from the Hamilton Rustler newspaper, Hamilton, Texas, on 31 Aug 1911.

J. A. ("Uncle Jimmy") Carter, died at his home near Ohio, Wednesday of this week, at an advanced old age, after many months of suffering from cancer. "Uncle Jimmy" Carter, as he was known by his friends, was one of the first settlers of Hamilton county and sacrificed much in his day for the cause of civilization and development in the Texas frontier country. In all his undertakings he was noticably (sic) successful and remained active up until the last few months of his life on earth. He fought a good fight and won, and now that he has passed to the Great Beyond, peace to his ashes, and to the sorrowing loved ones we extend sincere sympathy.
