Death of L. M. Sheets
Ex-Recorder of Gallia County at Home in Guyan Tuesday
Ex-Recorder Lewis Marion Sheets, passed away from earth to immortality Tuesday, Jan. 23, 1912, at his home in Guyan township. His funeral services were conducted at the Siloam Baptist church in that township, by Rev. Ira J. Sheets, his cousin, the interment following in the family cemetery by undertaker Myers, and were attended by a large concourse of old friends. The pall bearers were his four sons, F. T., W. E., W. B., and R. H. and two nephews—Cecil Sheets and Emmett Caldwell.
Mr. Sheets is survived by his wife, to whom he was united in marriage in 1863, her maiden name being Nancy Drummond, and she a daughter of Wesley Drummond. They became the parents of nine children, Celestia, deceased, who was the wife of James Sheets; Elizabeth, the wife of Sherman Caldwell; Lela, the wife of S. M. Wallace; Chloe, wife of Charles Beaver; Stella, who died in 1908, Taylor, William, Walker, Ex-Deputy Recorder and Raymond the youngest aged 16.
He is also survived by brothers E. W., of Hilton, B. M. of Crown City, J. J. of Northup, J. S. of Crown City, I. W. of Platform, Lawrence county and C. F., a half brother, of Atwood, Ill. And sisters Mrs. F. T. Niday, of Gallipolis, Mrs. Clarence Barcus, of Atwood, Ill.
He was the son of John H. and Jane Powell Sheets, and a grandson of William Sheets who came from Virginia in 1806 and was one of the first settlers. His great grandfather came from Germany in 1780. Mrs. Wm. Sheets was a descendant of Patrick Henry the Virginia orator.
Mr. Sheets educated himself principally at home and taught school for forty years of his life completing 100 terms. He had been a member of the Baptist church for 40 years and was a Mason and was laid away with Masonic honors.
He was elected Recorder on the Republican ticket and served one term. His health failing him he made no effort for the second term and when his time expired last September he moved to his home in Guyan, and went into a gradual decline of health, never returning, we believe, to Gallipolis. He was a kindly old man and during his residence in town he made many friends who regret exceedingly his departure.
